Job description
The Environment Health and Safety (EHS) Lead in Howrah, India, serves as the Chief Safety Officer pursuant to statutory requirements under the Factories Act 1948 and West Bengal Factory Rules. The position is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining comprehensive EHS management systems, programs, and policies to drive risk reduction, incident prevention, and regulatory compliance. Key duties include conducting job safety analyses, workplace safety inspections, accident investigations, safety training, environmental compliance monitoring, emergency preparedness, fire safety, and FM Global compliance activities. The role requires extensive liaison with regulatory authorities and active oversight of contractor safety management.
Responsibilities
1. Act as Chief Safety Officer as per statutory requirements under The West Bengal Factories (Safety Officers) Rules, 1978.
2. Advise and assist factory management on measures for preventing personal injuries and maintaining a safe working environment.
3. Conduct job safety analysis (JSA) for selected jobs and carry out safety inspections to identify unsafe plant, equipment, and practices.
4. Design and conduct safety training and educational programs for all organizational levels, particularly supervisory staff.
5. Investigate causes of fatal, serious, and selected accidents, dangerous occurrences, and industrial diseases, compiling reports and recommending preventive actions.
6. Promote, advise, and support the operation of factory safety committees.
7. Organize safety campaigns, competitions, and contests to maintain worker engagement in safety practices.
8. Maintain records on accidents, dangerous occurrences, and industrial diseases, reporting performance to management and regulatory authorities.
9. Liaise with internal departments (medical, training) and external authorities (Directorate of Factories, Fire Services, local authorities).
10. Develop and implement EHS policies, management systems (GEHSMS), procedures, and programs to ensure statutory compliance.
11. Oversee environmental compliance concerning air, water, and waste management, monitoring emissions and sustainability initiatives.
12. Conduct internal EHS audits, coordinate external audits, perform workplace inspections, and ensure timely closure of findings.
13. Maintain Emergency Response Plans (ERP), conduct mock drills, and manage fire prevention systems and FM Global compliance activities.
14. Monitor contractor safety compliance, perform inductions, and manage the permit-to-work (PTW) system.

Education qualifications

2. Recognized Degree, Diploma, or Certificate in Industrial Safety.
3. Thorough knowledge of Bengali acquired through a recognized Board or University.
4. Qualified at the viva voce test conducted by the West Bengal Labour Department Board.
5. Ability to speak Hindi.
6. Minimum age of 23 years.
7. Bachelor's degree in Engineering / Environmental Science (preferred).
8. Regional Labour Institutes (RLI) Certification (mandatory).
9. Preferred Certifications: NEBOSH / IOSH / ISO 45001 Lead Auditor / ISO 14001 Lead Auditor.
